Edmonton winters are among the coldest of any large Canadian city, so heater capacity matters. An undersized heater struggles to reach 80–90 °C in a garage or outdoor sauna in January, while the right model heats the room in well under an hour. Tell us your room size, or try our sauna heater calculator, and we will match the heater to your build.
For an indoor sauna in Edmonton, an electric heater is the most convenient option: steady heat, no firewood and precise temperature control. Popular choices:
If you are assembling a sauna kit or a custom sauna in Edmonton, choose the heater before finishing the electrical rough-in. Plan roughly 1 kW per cubic metre of room volume, plus extra for glass fronts or log walls. Electric heaters need a dedicated 240 V circuit installed by a licensed electrician, and the City of Edmonton requires an electrical permit. More help: what size sauna heater do I need.
Many Edmontonians build outdoor saunas at acreages or at lake cabins around Pigeon Lake, Wabamun and Lac Ste. Anne. For these, a wood-burning sauna stove is often the best choice – no heavy electrical service required and a traditional, soft heat. The Harvia M3 suits small outdoor saunas; the Pro 20, Legend and Cilindro wood stoves handle bigger rooms and long sessions. Outside-fed models let you load wood from a change room.
Follow the installation clearances in the manual, use an insulated chimney kit rated for sauna stoves, and check whether your insurer requires a WETT inspection. Compare options on our Harvia wood-burning stoves page.
